Reverend Cheryl Moore Adamson was born in Hartsville, South Carolina on May 23, 1952 and grew up in Conway, where she graduated from high school in 1970. She attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology in 1974 and the University of Maryland at College Park where she earned a Master’s Degree in Health Education in 1982.
Reverend Adamson has worked in various capacities over the years, primarily in medicine, public health, higher education, and non profit community service organizations. She has taught health education at the University of Maryland and Coastal Carolina University. She served as Health Educator in Columbus, Georgia, Columbia, South Carolina and Conway, South Carolina. She was selected to be the first Director of AIDS Education for the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control and served as the District Director of Health Education for the Waccamaw Public Health District. Reverend Adamson has worked as Office Manager of Horry Medical Associates, an internal medicine practice and as Executive Director of Family Outreach of Horry County.
Reverend Adamson volunteered as the director the Summer Cultural Enrichment Program at Smith-Jones Community Center in Conway for eight years. She was given the SERTOMA Citizenship Award by the Waccamaw SERTOMA Club in 1991 and received the Woman of the Year Award from the Conway Chamber of Commerce in 1992. Reverend Adamson is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Conway Medical Alliance, the South Carolina Medical Alliance, and the American Medical Alliance. She serves on the board of the Horry County Museum, is a member of the Steering Committee for the Baptist Studies Program of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, is a member of the Coordinating Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of South Carolina and was most recently named to the board of the Waccamaw Community Foundation.
Reverend Adamson preached her initial sermon on December 27, 1998 and was ordained on January 6, 2002. She graduated from Duke University School of Divinity with a Master of Divinity Degree on May 12, 2002. Reverend Adamson worked as chaplain with Mercy Hospice for three years and is the founding pastor of the Palmetto Missionary Baptist Church, which began worshipping on Sunday, October 1, 2006. She has been married for over thirty one years to Dr. James W. Adamson and is the mother of daughter Mary and son James. Her parents are Reverend Covel and Mrs. Mary Moore.
